How to share a screen recording as a link

To share a screen recording as a link, the recording has to live somewhere online, and the link points to it. You can upload the file to cloud storage yourself, or use a recorder that uploads while you record and hands you a link when you stop.

Why a link beats a file

Option 1: upload the file yourself

  1. Record and export the video as a file.
  2. Upload it to a storage service you already use, such as Google Drive or Dropbox.
  3. Change the file's sharing setting to "anyone with the link".
  4. Copy the link and send it.

This costs nothing extra, and it works. The trade-offs are the extra steps each time, the wait for the upload after you finish, and a player that was built for files in general, not for recordings.

Option 2: record straight to a link

With Recordful Pro the recording uploads as you record, so the link is ready when you press stop:

  1. Sign in to the extension and press record.
  2. Press stop. The recording opens on its own page.
  3. Turn on the share link and copy it.

If your connection drops or the browser crashes, the upload resumes where it left off.

Keeping a recording private

A link is only as private as its settings, so check three things before you send it:

Make the recording easy to follow

A link gets watched when the recording respects the viewer's time. Add captions so it works with the sound off, and give it a title that says what it shows. On Recordful Pro you can request a transcript for a recording, which also gives you captions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I share a recording without an account?

You can record without an account and send the exported file. A hosted link needs an account, because the recording has to be stored under someone's name.

Does the viewer need to install anything?

No. A share link opens in any modern browser.

Can I stop sharing later?

Yes. Turn the share link off and the page is no longer available to people outside your workspace.
