How to record your screen in Chrome
You can record your screen in Chrome without installing a desktop app. The fastest way is a screen recorder extension: install it, click its icon, choose what to capture, and press record. This guide covers that method and two alternatives, and when each one makes sense.
Method 1: a Chrome extension
An extension records from inside the browser, so there is nothing to install on your computer and it works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS.
With Recordful:
- Install the Recordful extension and pin it to the toolbar.
- Click the icon and pick what to record: the current tab, your whole screen, or just your camera.
- Choose a microphone if you want to talk over the recording, and turn the camera bubble on or off.
- Press record. Chrome asks which tab or screen to share the first time.
- While recording, draw, add arrows or text, or zoom in on what matters.
- Press stop. Trim the ends in the editor, then export the file.
Recording a single tab gives the cleanest result: no notifications, no other windows, and the tab's audio is captured directly.
No account is needed for any of this, and the recording stays on your device.
Method 2: your operating system's recorder
Every major system has a recorder built in:
- Windows: press
Win + Shift + Rto open the Snipping Tool's recorder, orWin + Gfor Game Bar. - macOS: press
Cmd + Shift + 5, choose a region or the full screen, and click Record. - ChromeOS: press
Ctrl + Shift + Show windowsand switch to video.
These are fine for a quick capture. They do not annotate, they do not add a camera bubble, and capturing a tab's sound alongside your microphone takes extra setup on some systems.
Method 3: a desktop app
Desktop recorders make sense when you record outside the browser most of the time, for example games or native apps, or when you need multi-track audio. They are heavier to set up and each one works a little differently on each system.
Which should you use?
- Show something in a web app, with your voice: an extension.
- Draw on the screen or zoom while recording: an extension.
- Grab ten seconds of anything, right now: the built-in recorder.
- Record games or native apps for long sessions: a desktop app.
Tips for a recording people will watch
- Say the point first. Open with what the viewer will learn, then show it.
- Record the tab, not the screen, when the subject is a website.
- Close what you do not need. Fewer tabs and no notifications means less to trim.
- Keep it short. Two minutes that answer one question beat ten that answer five.
- Trim both ends. The first and last few seconds are almost always you reaching for a button.
Frequently asked questions
Can Chrome record the screen on its own?
Chrome has no record button for everyday use. It provides the screen capture capability that extensions and web apps build on, which is why an extension is the usual way.
Does recording a tab capture its sound?
Yes. When you record a tab, its audio is captured along with your microphone if you enable one.
Is there a time limit?
The free Recordful extension records to your own device, so the practical limit is your disk space and memory.
